Juventus: Van Persie deal was Impossible For The Club

Juventus director general Beppe Marotta says it would have been "impossible" for the club to sign Robin van Persie.

Juve had made a determined effort to prise Van Persie away from Arsenal but lost out to Manchester United. Another Gunners striker, Nicklas Bendtner, eventually arrived on loan on deadline day..

Speaking to Sky Italia, Marotta defended Juve's transfer business, saying it would not have been feasible for any club in Serie A to sign the Dutchman due to the exorbitant cost.
"We had a few objectives on the market and we couldn't get all of them," he said. "For example, take Van Persie - at that moment in time it was impossible for any Italian club to sign him.
"To pay €30 million for a player coming towards the end of his contract, without taking into account his wages, was not possible for Juventus or any other Serie A club."
It was a frustrating window for Juve, with the likes of Luis Suarez and Fernando Llorente having also been linked at various points. They also failed with a late bid for Dimitar Berbatov, who decided to sign for Fulham.
Juve earlier looked to have gazumped Fiorentina for the Bulgarian, and the Violawere incensed by the Italian champions' actions. Marotta, though, insists his club did nothing wrong.
"I hope to come across president Andrea Della Valle soon so that we can clear up this Berbatov situation, but I want to underline that we didn't do anything wrong towards Fiorentina," he said. "We made an enquiry after the player had already turned down the Viola, but it all ended quickly because he told us that he preferred Fulham."
