Former Chelsea striker Nicolas Anelka appears set for an imminent exit from Shanghai Shenhua after the club said talks over the cancellation of his contract were ongoing..
Anelka, 33, joined the Chinese club in the January transfer window but has struggled to settle in the Chinese game, scoring only three goals since his move.
He was joined at Shanghai by fellow ex-Stamford Bridge forward Didier Drogba, who arrived in the summer and has been linked with a loan move to Juventus following the end of the Chinese season.
Shanghai confirmed that discussions about ending Anelka’s contract were in progress.
"The discussion is between the club and himself, I don't know about the specific details, but so far we haven't got the final result," spokesman Ma Yue said.
Reports in China say Anelka could be prepared to forego the final year of his contract on the understanding that he would then be given a free transfer.
Speculation has linked him with a return to England, with Queens Park Rangers reported to be interested in securing his signature.
