Mario Gomez goes for surgery

Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez faces a race against time to be fit for the start of the Bundesliga season after being injured against Werder Bremen on Saturday.
Gomez, 27, picked up the ankle injury during Bayern's penalty shoot-out defeat in the semi-final of the Liga-total! Cup and will now have an operation to remove loose fragments. He lasted just 42 minutes of the game before limping off..
Bayern, who have not won the Bundesliga title since 2010, open their campaign away to newly promoted SpVgg Greuther Furth on August 25. Before that they face champions Borussia Dortmund in the German Super Cup on August 12.
"He is not very well,'' Bayern's director of sport, Matthias Sammer, said. "He needs an operation. Then we will see how long he will be missing.''
Bayern have called off a friendly match against lower league opponents SG Sonnenhof Grossaspach scheduled for Wednesday due to their injury problems. They also lost Diego Contento during Saturday's match and he joined David Alaba and Rafinha on the sidelines.
"If a Bundesliga team like Bayern Munich announce they will play a friendly game, then they should appear with their big names,'' Sammer said. "Given the various injuries in previous days, this would no longer be possible and the football fans in Grossaspach would certainly have been disappointed.
"We regret this postponement and thank SG Sonnenhof Grossaspach for their understanding.''
